About the Awards
The MyPorter Awards are a national celebration of all things Portering. Initially started in 2020 as a virtual event - GV Healthcare, the creators of MyPorter saw first-hand from working with numerous hospitals how deserving of recognition porters were. Doctors and Nurses quite rightly gain lots of praise and exposure for the great work they do, but without the porters, the hospitals would grind to a halt. As a company we felt we wanted to give portering teams that day in the spotlight that shows them the appreciation other healthcare workers often receive.
2022 saw the hosting of the first ever live MyPorter Awards ceremony in central London, expanded from the initial MyPorter Award to now encompass 6 awards, covering everything from team of the year to leadership of the year and everything inbetween. The award categories and their descriptions can be found below.
2023 HIGHLIGHTS REEL
MyPorter Award - Porter of The Year
This award is to recognise true greatness. This award shines a light on portering as a whole through highlighting the actions of a spectacular individual deserving of the highest recognition. Out of all, this is the most prestigious award in portering. Maybe they have shown one of, or many of the factors the judges are looking for across each award category. Are they someone who does great things each and every day - they go that extra mile. Maybe they have risen to the challenge during troubling circumstances? Are they a charity champion? A helpful hero? A goal-getter? Maybe they have suffered loss and battled on through? See the nomination examples below and see for further details.
The Dennis Southern Award - For Endeavour
This award is presented in honour of Dennis Southern, a porter that showed commitment, dedication, passion and care through his career and had a positive impact on every individual that met him, whether that was a member of staff, a patient or patients family member. He encompassed everything that a porter needs to be and more. This award is to celebrate him and the individuals within our NHS portering services who embody Dennis' morals, ethics and outlook. A longstanding member of the team and a
true porter that all porter's can look up to and be proud of. Think of this as a lifetime achievement award - someone who has dedicated many years' of their life to portering.
Portering Team of The Year Award
This award is for the portering team that have shown extraordinary resilience, teamwork and contribution to their Trust. All portering teams have had to adapt and overcome huge difficulties due to the pandemic, this award is to shine a light and recognise a team that have excelled and dealt with this adaptation with incredible success. This is for a team that go above and beyond and show the spirit that embodies that of true teamwork - everyone puts their all in, together.
Outstanding Contribution to Patient Experience Award
This award is to recognise an individual example of going the extra mile for a patient/visitor or improving patient flow. To highlight a porter (or porters) that have surpassed reasonable expectations of thought and
care within their duty. Maybe they have gone out of their way to do something special for a patient - a duty which wasn't expected of them? Maybe they did something to cheer a patient up or make them feel settled in what can be a worrying environment for some patients. Maybe they're part-time singers, dancers, comedians or magicians just for the patients? Maybe they've done something to make the patient flow go smoother to enhance the patient journey. It's all about those random acts of kindness which bring a smile to a patient.
Leadership of The Year Award
This award is for outstanding leadership and recognises those managers/supervisors that
lead and guide their teams with understanding, patience, dedication and positive leadership.
They make coming to work a real joy for their staff and are a pleasure to work for.
They are fair, show compassion and make those key decisions when needed.
Newcomer of The Year Award
This is an award that recognises an appetite to learn and do well from the moment this person stepped through those hospital doors. As Facilities Teams face a shortfall in staff and a need to bring in 'new blood', this award aims to shine a light on someone who has taken to the role of porter and can be seen as a benchmark for success to encourage others to follow suit - helping to show portering as a positive and possible career option.
International Porter of The Year Award
This award is a prestigious recognition that celebrates the invaluable contributions of porters from around the world. These unsung heroes play a crucial role in the healthcare system by ensuring the efficient and safe movement of patients, equipment, and supplies within medical facilities. This award honours their dedication, compassion, and exceptional service, highlighting their vital role in maintaining the smooth operation of healthcare institutions. It serves as a token of gratitude to those who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of patients and healthcare professionals, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being of the global healthcare community.
