Two of the most anticipated awards shortlists in the healthcare calendar have been revealed. The National MyPorter Awards and MyCleaning Awards, both held proudly in association with NHS England and supported by Gold sponsors, ISS and Medirest respectively, are ready to once again celebrate the unsung heroes of healthcare: porters and domestic service professionals.

This year saw an impressive total of nearly 500 entries, marking the biggest and most competitive year yet. Returning judges Phil Shelley and Emma Brookes joined forces with NHS England colleagues Fay Lane and Sheila Connolly, and representatives from GV Healthcare, comprising the six-strong judging panel. Convening at this year’s Awards venue, Neon 194 in Picadilly, London, the judges carefully reviewed the entries and crowned the very best in the field.

Phil Shelley, NHS England, said: "The sheer number of entries that we have read, shows how many people within healthcare, want to give that higher praise and recognition to their fellow colleagues, who are deserving of seeing their efforts congratulated. So many incredible award applications, that help us understand the professionalism within our teams, balanced with a personal approach, emphasising the importance of our services. It makes me proud to be a part of these awards”.

Scheduled for February, the awards ceremonies will span two consecutive days, celebrating the healthcare professionals who demonstrate exceptional dedication and commitment. Day One, the National MyCleaning Awards, will be dedicated to Healthcare Cleaners, Domestic teams, and Auditors for their crucial role in maintaining a clean and safe hospital environment. Day Two, the National MyPorter Awards will recognise the exemplary work of the portering services within healthcare.

Adding to the excitement, each day will start with a conference featuring insightful talks on the latest innovations and challenges within healthcare cleaning and portering. Presented by a mix of NHS England and NHS Trust representatives, alongside industry experts, the conferences will also include interactive workshops and a live panel, giving guests the opportunity to ask questions from the floor.

Highlights include:

-            Phil Shelley revealing latest on the Portering Standards

-            NHS supply chain offering a first look at a potential Estates and Facilities uniform for consultation

-            Delia Cannings delivering her impactful talk: “The Power of Effective Auditing”.

Kay Mulcahy, Associate Director of National Estates Operations (Hard and Soft FM) at NHS England, added: "At NHS England, we’re proud of our involvement in these prestigious awards. It’s great to be able to have ceremonies like this that recognise the true strength and greatness that come from within our hospital environments.

"I look forward to meeting the winners and hearing their great stories of achievement at the live events, where together we can celebrate the successes of those deserving of such recognition."

The winners will be announced at the live MyCleaning Awards on 25th February, and the MyPorter Awards on 26th February.

This year, the awards received a record-breaking number of nominations, with over 300 entries from across the UK and Ireland. This made the task of selecting the finalists extremely difficult for the NHS England judges, who reviewed each nomination carefully and recognise the outstanding contributions made by those in Portering and Healthcare Cleaning roles.

The live awards ceremonies are taking place in February over two consecutive days in central London. The opening day will commence with a live conference featuring sessions on the latest trends within healthcare cleaning from NHS England with a keynote from Emma Brookes and industry champion Delia Cannings will again take to the stage, sharing her expertise and insights. The second day will feature discussions led by NHS England’s Phil Shelley, addressing the latest on the new portering standards, sessions by Caroline Lowe and Fay Lane regarding apprenticeships and the latest on the new national non-clinical uniform.

These sessions will be followed by a panel discussion, where the industry leaders will answer questions from the audience and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the portering, auditing and cleaning services in the NHS.

Phil Shelley, NHS England, will discuss the new portering standards at the National MyPorter Awards

The deadline for nominations for the National MyCleaning and MyPorter Awards, both in association with NHS England, is now only six weeks away.

The live events will each include a conference earlier in the day, featuring a keynote speech from NHS England’s Emma Brookes on cleaning standards and the next steps. Additionally, Phil Shelley of NHS England will provide an update for portering teams, discussing the plans and the latest on the new portering standards.

“I’m really looking forward to giving an update on where we’re at with the portering standards, giving those who will be implementing them within their hospitals a first glimpse of what we’re looking to achieve. This isn’t about us; it’s about them. These are their standards. Likewise, the awards aren’t about us; it’s about them. I can’t wait to be there, celebrating our wonderful portering and cleaning teams and the tremendous work and effort they show day in and day out. If you know someone or some team that really deserves some extra praise, please get your nominations in, as I can’t wait to read them.” - Phil Shelley, Senior Operational Manager at NHS England

Nominations are open until midday on January 12th, 2024, with portering and domestic services urged to submit their nominations now.
